Busy Times

Hmmmmmmmm, where to begin......

It's nearly holidays!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!! 2 1/2 days work and then I am off to HB for nearly two weeks. I haven't had a break this year so I am REALLY looking forward to it. I head down on Wednesday afternoon.

Spyke had a busy weekend two weeks ago. We went to the forest with Nic and Sarah on the Saturday. We had a couple of 'canters' and Spyke bucked!!!!!! The little bugger, he really knows how to get in the bad books!! Fortunately we were going fairly fast at the time so it was just a forward buck that is not unseating at all. However it did mean that I was EXTREMELY nervous about going to the WRC Showmanship Challenge the next day, especially after he had reared at the SJ Clinic. It didn't help that straight after the in hand bit he pulled back and broke his halter. I was very cross and did, in fact, punch him in the mush . He was just being a plonker!!! And he did pull his head in after that and in fact didn't put a foot wrong the rest of the day. The day consisted of in-hand showing, a ridden workout, a round of jumps and, if you were in the top four of your class, a dressage test.

Spyke got second in the in-hand, second in the ridden workout and LAST in the jumping (actually it was me that got last in the jumping as it was an 'equitation' class which means it is the rider being judged, not the horse....why oh why do I ALWAYS fall to pieces when we are 'out' as we are a great team at home???). Fortunately, we just scraped through to the dressage and I was dead chuffed with his test!!! We managed to be the second horse in (which was a REALLY good plan as the dressage dragged on for ages and it meant we could retire to the truck with some cold drinks to watch the rest of the tests). His test was FABULOUS!!!! He cantered beautifully and only threw his head around when we did extended canter so he is clearly feeling MUCH better. Just knowing he felt better made the whole day completely worthwhile. And to top it off he actually won his class overall (he got second the dressage too). :-)

This weekend was lovely too. I caught up with Richard and Heather with Dibley and Beryl with Mindy for a dog walk at the botanic gardens in Manurewa. The dogs had a fabulous time and spent a LOT of time in the pond.





After the dog walk Kristina and I went to the Muriwai end of the forest (as we had Em who is a bit old for the hills at the top) and had a LOVELY ride including a canter up 'the hill'. On Sunday Sarah and I went to the top end of the forest and had a lovely hoony ride. We cantered and galloped at every opportunity and, not only did Spyke NOT buck, I actually had to give him a tap with the whip to get him out of a very slow canter. LOL

On Thursday I had a day's leave to do some Christmas shopping and it was a very fruitful day. I even managed to look at some saddles and bugger it, the one I like the most (and it will rpobably be a good fit on Spyke) is , of course, $3000 dollars worth!!! Ouch. The REAL bugger is, there are currently two second hand ones on Trade Me for almost half that and they almost never come up for sale second hand and I just can't afford to buy one. Aaaaaargh!!! I have listed my Stubben (sob) and my Fenmore in the hope I can sell them and THEN I might be able to get one of the saddles I would like. However, with it being so close to Christmas I am not very hopeful of selling.

Only three weeks (just under) to Christmas and it is not yet registering on my radar yet, too much else on the go.

So, where are we?

Spyke

Spyke has had Rachel out again and he was a far happier horse. Interestingly, the day before Rachel came out he asked me to give him a bit of a massage on two parts that were particularly sore when Rachel treated him the first time (when I say 'asked' he shoved his butt at me and made it EXTREMELY clear what he wanted LOL). It was like he realised that the massage had helped and was keen for more. On the mega down side it turns out that my Stubben saddle (that I LOVE) doesn't fit him so I need to sell it and start looking for a newer saddle. :-( I will also have to sell my Fenmore dressage saddle to fund the new one. :-( Am pretty gutted about it as it leaves me just the Wintec to ride in and it is HORRIBLE to jump in.

Tai

Tai gave us a bit of a fright last week when he was suddenly hoppingly lame, he could hardly walk. Fortunately a lump had appeared on his tendon so we were able to figure out what was causing the lameness. We gave him bute and bandaged him for a few days and he very quickly came right. - Whew. The boys had their feet done in the weekend and poor Tai found the stones a bit hard so kind Uncle Paul gave him a towel to stand on so he could do the opposite foot. LOL The big girls blouse.

Brina

Brina has completed her course of injections and, while she definitely is better than she was, she is still limpy. I'm not sure what is the best thing to do now . :-( Apart from that she is as happy as a sandboy.

Sammie

Sammie is, as usual, great. She was a carting dog last weekend as we went to the lighting of the Telecom Christmas Tree and took a picnic. Sammie pulled the wagon with all the chairs and the picnic. She was BRILLIANT and I think was quite proud of herself. Loads of little kids rushed over though and wanted to know what we were 'going to do' as they thought we were part of the show. They wanted to know if we were bringing Santa in. LOL. I don't have any pics though as I didn't have a camera that works.

However.....I do now!!! I finally got my new XT Network phone. It is a Sony C510 and is a mid range phone BUT it has a 3 mp camera!!!Yay!!! Will never be stuck for photos again. :-) And in fact all the pics added today are from the phone camera.

This weekend was yet another busy one. On Saturday I did some housework, baked a raspberry and white chocolate slice (VERY yummy) and went to the forest with Kristina, Sarah and Martina. It was great to see Martina out and about again although I think it's going to be a while before she will be back to normal again. On Sunday I was the driver/photographer for Krisitna and Sarah at the Te Atatu ODE. It was a long, long day and quite hot!!! Sarah had a great day and was really buzzing after her cross country (even though Bert reared RIGHT up so she slid down over his butt. She landed on her feet though). Poor Kristina didn't have quite such a good day. She did a FAB dressage test but then had some issues while warming up for the show jumping and ended up falling off after Oscar did a particularly awkward jump. At that point she decided discretion was the better part of valour and called it a day to go and regroup.

Today (Monday) I am home as I woke this morning with a really sore throat and a headache. I slept till about 12 (poor Dad phoned and woke me up and I was..... ummmmmmm .....not very cheerful as I had been in quite a deep sleep - sorry Dad).

Spyke's Halo Slips

Gosh a lot has happened since I last posted. Brina has become a regular vet visitor. She had a week on Rimadyl to see if it helped with her gimpiness but it didn't really make a difference. She is currently half way through a course of four injections of Pentosan. I have also changed her onto Lurisyn which is supposed to be amazing for arthritis. I am starting to see improvement so I am keeping EVERYTHING crossed that the treatment will do the trick as otherwise we are looking at surgery and my bank balance is not really up to that. :-(

Spyke had a visit from the equine physio (Rachel). He was very, very sore!!!!! He even tried to kick her at one point (gently, of course). The new tenant has moved onto the grazing and Sarah has brought Em and Bert on. The tenant has a rather lovely 2 year old colt. Unfortunately it appears that Spyke reacts to the colt. He has been MADLY in love with the colt's dam (he has never shown any interest in any mare before, even when he lived right next door to two) and hated having to leave her side for even a minute. Fortunately that seems to have settled (may it stay that way).

We have been going to the forest a lot which has been just lovely. Spyke, Oscar and Bert all get on soooooo well that we have some brilliant rides together. Spyke really seems to enjoy them too. We have also been doing some jumping in the paddock which has been brilliant. It's really nice having riding buddies again!!!

Today we had a Show Jumping Clinic with young show jumper Lisa Coupe. We had lessons with her before at Redhills. Today's jumping was at Limbury Park in a group of five for 90 minutes. I was really, really looking forward to it as Spyke has been jumping soooooo well. We got there nice and early, tacked up and walked the horses around the arena to have a look at all the jumps and 'scary things'. Spyke was great, didn't put a foot wrong. At the start of the lesson we had to find a space on our own somewhere around the arena and Lisa came to us individually to warm up. Spyke was a little, teeny tiny bit unsettled at this point but not enough to worry me. But then another horse trotted past and he just stood on his back legs.......TWICE!!!! It really rattled me as rearing is not something he has ever done. I had a chat to him about how if he ever did something like that and I got hurt he would be sold instantly......AND (and I think this is what got through to him) that if he misbehaves at jumping days then he would just have to only do dressage.

The next part of the warm up was to trot and canter over some poles. When I rounded Spyke up a bit in the canter he started throwing his head around and hollowing again. I very nearly gave up at that point and seriously thought about getting off. Instead I cantered him again but on a fairly long rein and he seemed OK so we carried on.

We did some trot poles and a small jump and then we did the trot poles, followed by a line of two jumps. The second jump had a scary (apparently) filler. Spyke trotted into it, I was COMPLETELY convinced that he was going to jump but at the very last second he slammed on the anchors, ducked backwards, dropped his shoulder, dumped me in the sand and buggered off. TOAD!!!!!!!

I got back on and jumped him over it about six times until he jumped it smoothly. After that, he really didn't put a foot wrong and we managed to finish the lesson. It is sooooo frustrating as Spyke is usually SUCH a fabulous horse but he always seemes to save his bad behaviour for these days. I am hoping to get a few more lessons with Lisa (she has a broken foot and can't ride which means it is easy to get lessons with her at the moment :-)

Nearly Christmas

Yikes, it is November! How did that happen??? Where did the year go? Life, you will be surprised to hear, has been busy.

My friend Martina is very ill and in hospital at the moment so I am having to look after her horses. How ironic as it was only a few weeks ago that I got kicked by her 'little darling' and had to say that I would be unable to help with any handling of her and now……sole charge!!!! Yikes!!! Jelly and I are doing some gentle work on ‘how to be nice grown up horse’ which is coming along nicely and I even managed to lead her through an entire paddock with getting kicked, front footed or bitten. Woohoo!!!!!

Brina is very limpy at the moment :-(. I ran out of glucosamine and since she has been so sound I really didn’t rush out and instantly buy some more and now she won’t come sound again. It looks like we will be off to see Uncle Vet. And Spyke is having visit from the equine physio next week as he is not 100% happy at the moment. We had our final dressage day of the series yesterday and he was awful!!! He was all hollow and was throwing his head around and just hated being asked to collect. I did my second test on a long rein (which got me slammed by the judge) but he was completely happy so I will get him checked out.

The girls had a photo shoot last weekend. A friend of a friend wants ot get into pet photography and needed some practice so we took the girls up to the forest and took lots and LOTS of photos. It was such fun (at least Brina and I thought so). Sammie hated it, she hated the camera and REFUSED to put her ears forward for ANY reason. Whereas Brina would bounce into focus with ‘Pick me! Pick me! This is my good side……no wait….this is too” She was soooo funny.

Last night (Wednesday) Kristina and I went for an evening ride in the forest. It was sooo lovely!! We had to make it all a bit 'snappy' as we didn't have a LOT of time after work but the boys were just fabulous and I so enjoy riding with Kristina and Oscar. Next time we should have Sarah and Bert along too as she is moving her boys back west and.....in with my two. The new tenant wants four geldings in together and I have to say I was not very keen on strange horses in with my two so I contacted Sarah and she is really really keen and moves in a week on Saturday...Yay!!!! Sarah and her boys are lovely.

In the weekend Tina and I took young Biscuit off to Abderry for her to begin her formal education. It's quite exciting really, I can't wait for her to come back in a couple of months all trained and ready to go to the forest.

I think that is all my news. Oh except that Spyke did actually get third in one of his tests at the last dressage day. :-) He is a luffly, luffly boy!!!!!

The girls were brilliant!!! And I have some pikkies. :-) We did three final shows, Friday night, Saturday Matinee and Saturday evening. The girls had it completely down pat and were great. At the final show the girls had to do a 'walk on' at the end. I was a bit worried about how they would manage going to the front of the stage with all the applause but they LOVED it and lapped up all the luuuuurve.

The Sleigh

After the show we were out with Mum and Dad and the girls were swamped by admirers, they coped really well but Brina got a bit stressed towards the end and unfortunately her little friend, who hugged her all week, came running out of the dark and grabbed her and she didn't react very well. It was a real shame as she had made FANTASTIC progress with dealing with children.

Spyke has had the week off since I had issues with the weather and with trying to keep the dogs clean. In fact he had Sunday off too as I went looking at horses with a friend. We looked at two. The first one was in shocking condition, it was seriously thin and sad. :-( The second one was a big TB off the track and he was very kind and sweet. We also took the dogs to the forest for a good run and a swim. I think my two were COMPLETELY delighted to be finally allowed to get dirty. Poor Brina was gimpy though as I have run out of glucosamine (am picking some up tomorrow) and she was also very worried about lecky fences.

I lunged Spyke today (once I got back from Wellington). He was soooooo funny. He did a big buck in the canter which started to pull the lunge line through my hands which burnt so I let go. He did a big circle and brought the rein back to me so I picked it up and carried on. Then I lunged him over a jump. He jumped it beeeeeeooooootifully!!!! He really basculed and picked his back feet right up.........then bucked, pulled the lead out of my hand and buggered off up the paddock. Then he buggered off back down the paddock and screeched to a halt next to Tai......so I got my gloves. :-) He jumped really nicely after that.

Saturday was my second ever Novice dressage outing with Spyke. The weather was very kind to us and the torrential rain stayed away until AFTER I had ridden (thank goodness). For some reason I was very nervous about the day but Spyke was just the best. He was completely relaxed and gave me everything I asked for. Unfortunately, I don't always ask for the right things. :-) I get all my signals mixed up and get all stiff and nervous.

Our first test was 2.5 (thank GOODNESS Kristina was there as I was going to do the other test first AND my mind went completely blank at a couple of points so having Kristina to call was fantastic!!!!). It went as well as I could have hoped really for our first ever attempt. We got lots of helpful comments from the judge for things we can work on and.........we got third!!!!!!! *Insert huge grin here* So proud of my boy. The final comment from the judge was 'He's a cutie!' :-)

What was MOST exciting though was that while I was warming up Spyke was listening so incredibly to me. To get him to rein back I just had to shift my weight a tiny little bit and to change up a pace I just had to touch him very, very lightly with my legs. What a fantastic horse he is.

The second test was 2.2 which has the dreaded leg yields in it. We don't really 'do' leg yields yet and we proved it. LOL. Our comment from the judge for our second leg yield (which turned into a 'bend like a banana and shoot to the left') was 'quite unusual'. Haha. We also got an incorrect lead on one canter so I definitely fall to pieces a bit when I get in the ring. We got 5th = for that test (out of 9 people).

Overall I was pretty happy with the day as Spyke went a LOT better than his first novice day and managed to improve his placings and scores.

That evening it was the girls' turn to have a moment in the spotlight, it was the opening night of the production. They were BRILLIANT!!!! They were a little startled by the clapping that their appearance brought on and The Rabble were much louder and more enthusiastic with a 'real' audience but the girls carried on pulling and doing their job. They were fantastic. They had another performance today and were just as professional. They are so relaxed abut the whole thing. While they are out back they have children patting them, hugging them, putting hats on them running around them and jumping over them and they don't flinch. I'm very proud. I WISH I had photos to share but I will work on it.

Proper Rehearsal

Wohoo!!! Tonight the girls had their first proper rehearsal. I got a second set of chains on the way home from work (yikes....expensive!!!) and the prop people had put the hooks onto the sleigh so tonight the girls were hooked up in tandem for the first time. They were brilliant!!!!

The children (Rabble) were pushing the sleigh as it is quite big and they did get a bit carried away and nearly pushed the girls off the other side. LOL So the girls ended up slightly behind the scenery. While they were lying on stage during the song Sammie rolled over and moved the sleigh and I realised that they could probably actually pull it themselves, without the Rabble pushing.

When the queen got back into the sleigh we had to convince Brina that nap time was over as she was quite happy to hog the stage for the rest of the evening (prima donna LOL). Once again the kids pushed a bit enthusiastically and A) nearly ran the girls into the wall and B) ran through the curtain and broke the front of the sleigh. But it was a pretty successful first attempt.

We stayed until after rehearsal and took the dogs up when there were no kids about and had a wee go at pulling without help. It was no problem for the girls at all!!!!! The only thing was that in such a tight space they will still need a couple of Rabble to steer and brake (so it doesn't run the girls over). Yay yay yay!!!!

Tomorrow we will attampt (weather permitting) to ride AND got to rehearsal, it will be a long day!!!!

Busy Busy Busy (Pic heavy and loooong)

We have been very busy!!!!! I have been sick, just with a minor touch of flu but it meant I ended up taking a total of six days off work as I didn't want to 'share' it so Spyke had a bit of a holiday. Then the weather turned to custard so he hasn't had much work this week either.

Last weekend was very busy. Saturday was actually fairly quiet, which was nice but Sunday was FULL ON!!!! In the morning I helped Martina to wean Badjelly. It went very well and everyone was pretty well behaved, which was great as I know that Martina was stressing a bit about it. Straight after The Great Weaning I took the girls to the forest for a walk and on the way back I helped Kristina to build her yards. The wood was really, really heavy and we did a fair bit of hammering. I came away with a couple of blisters. Just as we finished (at about 4pm) Martina turned up and asked if I could help her rug the horses. I was pretty tired by this time (having just had a week off work sick) and still needed to exercise Spyke so he would be sane for our lesson the next morning. So Martina said to go and ride first. I popped into Kristina's house and when I came back out Martina had gone. I had decided while in the house that I would rather help rug before riding as once I had ridden I knew that I would find it difficult to head back up to Martina's. I figured she must have gone back to her paddock so I went round there. She was nowhere to be seen and in my stupid tired state I stupidly decided to just rug the horses on my own.

Java was fine, I just threw her rug on (fully supervised by Jelly) then I caught Jelly and tied her up. I have rugged her several times before so I wasn't really worried. I put the rug over her but when I went to do up the leg strap she whipped around and booted me in knee. Wench!!!!! I found a stick (very light and breakable) on the ground and whacked her on the leg with it which gave her a bit of a surprise (it really was a stick that would not hurt her in ANY way). I took the rug off, let her go, got a standard (to make my arm a bit longer) and made her keep her distance from me. She whipped around and kicked out at me a couple of times but with my 'long arm' there was no way she was going to get me. Anyway, after that I was a bit sore and also couldn't face going all the way home to change into jods so I just lunged Spyke and then had a really good melt down!!! I was sooooo tired, it had been such a loong day and I was really nervous about the lesson, especially as I hadn't managed to work Spyke as well as I wanted and he was quite full of spring grass so I had a REALLY good cry. I also felt really bad but I had to tell Martina that I can't help her with Jelly any more as we just don't get on. :-(

Monday was another BIG day. I had a lesson with Tracy Page in the morning. It was GREAT!! Spyke was very good. We had one bogey jump that we had a lot of issues with but we got it right in the end. Tracy really liked him and told me that I definitely should do Show Hunter with him. After my lesson Kristina had a ride on Oscar who was just brilliant.

Next on our agenda was to take the horses up to Kumeu Grain so they could be guinea pigs for trainee vet nurses. The boys were sooooooo good. They were examined from head to foot by about 6 people each. They had their temp taken, their respiratory rate, their lungs were listened to, as were their gut sounds and, of course, their hearts. They were then used for bandaging and trotting out practice.

After being guinea pigs, they were sedated and had their teeth done and then their manes pulled. They were a bit gobsmacked I think but they were such good boys all day.

On the doggy front the girls have been invited to take part in a stage production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe so when I'm not working or riding I am with the girls at rehearsals. They are going to 'pull' in the White Witch's sleigh which should be a laugh.

This week Spyke has managed to get coverbound (tangled in his rugs 'cos he keeps breaking them) THREE times!!!! And has had to be rescued by strangers. Plonker!!!! He is now in a canvas so he had better not wreck that!!!!

Today it was really, really wet all morning which was an EXCELLENT excuse for a lie-in. :-) The boys had their feet done and then Kristina went and had a lovely walk in the forest. I was able to ride the entire ride on the buckle. Spyke is SUCH a nice horse. This weekend coming up we have our next novice dressage challenge and opening night of the play so this week is going to be INCREDIBLY busy with riding and rehearsals every night!!!! Wish us luck!!!! :-)

First Novice

Well we have completed our first novice test and I would have to say that we did NOT cover ourselves in glory!!! However, we did not come last and there were some good moments. We did manage to get two 8s in one test and one in the other. We won’t mention the 4s we got. LOL

Spyke warmed up beautifully for his tests. He was forward and listening but then it rained!!!! Torrentially!! Just as we were about to do our first test. Apparently Spyke doesn’t ‘do’ rain. I have to admit that it is the first time since I got him that we have ridden in serious rain so it was a learning curve. He was actually ok to start with but managed to trip over his own feet on the third movement and I lost my stirrup and then we never recovered our composure and did a pretty blinkin’ hideous test. Including striking off on the wrong leg which he NEVER does at home. The judge was very kind to us as she recognised that we really struck out with conditions.

Our second test was much better but he has started tossing his head a bit. I think it is and evasion as I asking a bit more of him these days. I want him to be more forward, off the forehand and in a slightly more advanced frame. I’m not sure that he is enjoying it yet. I will get his teeth etc checked before I start insisting that he not do it as I would hate to be causing him discomfort. We actually got a worse score for our second test as the judge was more demanding but that is fine. At least I know what we have to work on.

I had a cold on Thursday/ Friday and was feeling much better on Saturday but unfortunately, getting COMPLETELY drenched has set me back a bit (lot) and I am feeling pretty blinkin’ awful today. BUT I have booked a lesson with Tracey Page (Amateur Show Hunter of the Year) next Monday so I have GOT to be well by then. I can’t wait!!!!

A Sad Day

Changes are afoot!!! Unfortunately, I have lost my grazing. :-( I have been grazing at the property for nine years so to have to move is a bit of a shock!!! The people that are leasing the property are moving on and so must I. Fortunately, my good buddy Kristina, who lives just around the corner is silly…..cough cough….I mean kind enough to take on my boys. It will be really nice to have a riding buddy again, I haven’t had one for years. The big down side is that I can’t have the dogs up there (which is completely fair enough) but it will mean that I will have to be more time conscious of time when riding as I need to give the dogs time too. I will wait and see how it works out. I am a bit worried about Tai as at 28 it is quite a big thing to be moving. The current grazing has been so perfect for him but he has stayed at Kristina’s before so hopefully all will be well.

Apart from the grazing bombshell that I got on Sunday evening I had a FABULOUS weekend. The weather was stunning!!! On Saturday I picked up some drums to use as jump stands so I am finally set up to do some jumping. I had lunch out with Tina to thank her for providing the truck to pick up the drums which was really nice (haven’t had lunch out for aaaaaaaages). I took the dogs to the forest and then did some jumping with Spyke.

We did two exercises, both designed to encourage a good shape over the jumps. The first was trot poles, into a small cross pole and then one stride to an ascending oxer. I think I only managed trot poles once, the rest of the time Spyke seemed to think they were canter poles, the big noddy. LOL. The second exercise was an oxer with a placing pole on either side. He got that a bit wrong a couple of times (too enthusiastic) so I cantered him past it a few times and then popped him over and he was spot on.

Saturday night was a social night…. I know, I know…unheard of!!! I was invited out to dinner for a 40th and had a lovely evening at Molten in Mt Eden Rd. Yummy food and excellent company.

On Sunday I went to the forest with Martina. Kristina and Oscar were supposed to come too but poor Oscar has had a TERRIBLE tummy bug and was far too unwell to join us (he is on the mend now though). We rode down at the Muriwai end as it is flatter for Java who is just starting out for the season. I was really, really pleased with Spyke as he was forward, positive and very, very sensible. He even walked through puddles when I insisted. It was a really lovely ride.

Stressage

Since our FABULOUS jumping on Monday night I have been doing some flat work. Last night I was teensy bit sore so I figured Spyke would be too so we had a fairly easy ride. We just did lots of long and low and transitions within the pace (asking for longer and shorter strides) He was very, very good and even did lengthening and shortening in canter really nicely (in the past it proved very difficult to get him balanced again after a longer canter).

Tonight I made him work a bit harder and I really tried to get him forward and up off the forehand. It was quite a mixed evening as he did some fairly hideous stuff (including a good buck when I tapped with the dressage whip). However after the 'tap episode' he picked himself up and was much more forward which was great. I just need to learn to control the forward-ness now.

I wore a pair of baby spurs tonight and I was very excited to actually get, for the very first time, some movement off the leg. The best thing was it was just the back end that responded when asked so we are making some progress. :-) I finished with some halt-trot, trot- halt transitions and he did a couple of really, really fantastic halt - trot transitions. He really used his back end and back. It felt amazing so I stopped at that.

I achieved a bit of a goal today!!! I jumped full barrel height. I haven't jumped that high for a long time. Spyke was BRILLIANT!!! Very relaxed and sensible. I was sooooo lucky the day I got him. He was jumping pretty flat though when normally he has a fabulous bascule so we have a bit of work to do but I can't wait to get on with it. As you can see from the vids I don't think we actually managed to jump without knocking the pole so, as with my dressage, we have to think 'Up and Forward!!'.

This last weekend held a bit of variety for The Spykelet. On Friday evening after work I planned on lunging. I thought that a bit of flat followed by a bit of lunging over a small jump would be good for him. By the time I had got up to the paddock and sorted out my wee jump (half barrel oxer with ‘wings’) the light was starting to go so I had to do a bit less flat than I would have (which is not a terrible thing as he is not very fit). We did our flat (he was noticeably stiffer on the right rein) and then I changed the lunge rein to do some jumping. I gave him a couple of circuits on the flat and then steered him over the jump. He was really keen to jump. Really, really keen. LOL The plan was to pop him over the jump a few times in each direction…..BUT….. he hurtled around like the racehorse he used to be and jumped the jump very flat and from waaaaaay back. Clearly, the jump was just too small. I pulled him up and wopped the barrels up to full height. Three times each way was the plan. He jumped it the first two times beautifully but then jumped through it the third time. I popped him at it again and again he was jumping too flat and jumped through the jumps (ie demolishing it). So I putting a ‘placing pole’ one stride out from the jump so that he would be jumping from the right spot and ‘hey presto’ he basculed beautifully over it, giving it plenty of clearance. I really like lunging him over jumps as I get a good picture of how he is going and the type of schooling we need. I stopped at that point as a) he jumped it beautifully, b) he was getting a bit tired and c) the light was going but mostly it was because of a.

Saturday was exciting (well, in my world anyway) as it was our first trip to the forest this season. It was also our first trip in Martina’s flashy new truck. I was quite nervous about driving a new truck as it is a bit bigger and newer than the old one. However all was well and it is a fabulous truck to drive. Spyke and Oscar loaded happily on to it and appeared to have a comfortable ride. They came off the truck nice and relaxed and stayed that way for the entire day. They were SUCH good ponies. We had a fantastic ride, including trotting, cantering and a wee jump and the boys never put a foot wrong. It was also a beautiful and warm day. I was actually really, really pleased with how Spyke was at the end of the ride. He was not particularly sweaty and had managed Andreas Hill with relative ease. So I think he is actually reasonably fit and we can crack on with the season.

On Saturday night I took the girls for a walk with their buddy Tuskani the dalmation down at Mission Bay where we indulged in some yummy gelato.

Sunday was supposed to be the Cambridge Stallion Parade but the forecast was so awful we decided not to go. Instead I managed to do some schooling with Spyke in preparation for our first outing on September 12th…. Our first novice *gulp*. He did some really nice work for me. We still have lots to work on but if he does his tests as well as he practiced them we won’t be embarrassed.

On the doggie front the girls and I had our weekly walk in the forest and then caught up with Tina for a cup of coffee, which was really nice. Just as I was about to settle down for the evening Martina turned up with a rug for Tai so back to the paddock we went and changed his rugs just in time for the rain to start. The timing was PERFECT and I was able to relax knowing that he was well rugged. I finished my weekend off by cleaning and oiling all my gear, which was looong overdue.

Spring

Today was a fabulous spring day!!! After spending the last three days in Christchurch for work (I DO like that city) it was lovely to get out into the country and spend some quality time with the animals.

First up today was the farrier. The Spyklet got his shoes back on.....yay....back to work. It was so lovely that the boys had their rugs removed for the day. Straight after that I took the girls for the usual lovely walk in the forest. It was really, really warm up there and the girls had a few lovely swims.

Next on the agenda was stopping by Kristina's to be her 'pole person' when she rode Oscar. He is such a sweet boy and sooooooo laid back. Kristina is recovering from swine 'flu and I would have to say that she looked pretty awful by the end of the ride (sorry K LOL). Oscar was a wee star though and did a couple of exercises from a book of 101 jumping exercises. They loooked like really interesting exercises so I thought I might try them with Spyke.

After Kristina's I had to race out and get some dog food. Unfortunately, the shop didn't have any so I had to buy a small bag to keep me going for a few days till they could get some in. It's a REALLY expensive way of doing it. :-(

Next on the agenda was a ride on Spyke. He was sooooooo lovely. I am trying really hard to work on my position as Spyke tends to go very 'on the forehand' so I am really trying to open up my front (if that makes sense), keep my shoulders back and think 'forward and up'. It really seemed to work as Spyke didn't drop on the forehand and went really, really well. Once we are going going 'forward and up' I will work on getting him into a better frame. He did some FABULOUS halt to trot transitions and then we did the 2 exercises over poles. They were a LOT harder than they looked. They REALLY made both of us work hard and they showed that Spyke needs some free-ing up on the right rein. They were great exercises and I am now going to invest in the book as well as the 101 flat exercises.

Kristina had a short ride on Spyke (he was a little naughty with her, the toad. Not a lot but a little) and then we called it a day. After the ride, while fiddling about, I managed to get Tai's 'bean' out which was BRILLIANT as it has has been worrying me for ages. For those of you are not horsey, it is a boy thing and it is best not to ask!!!!! Hopefully he will be a lot more comfortable now. :-)

Tomorrow I am going to buy some jump poles (to be followed next week by some drums for stands - very excited!!!), then I will shoot down to Waiuku to get some hay and then it will be another ride.
